St Michael and All Angels, Howick

St Michael and All Angels is the parish church of Howick. As it is situated within the grounds of Howick Hall Gardens, it is often mistaken as the estate chapel. The church is home to a small faithful congregation of villagers and local residents and welcomes thousands of visitors each year who enjoy its peace and tranquillity. The church is a beautiful and prayerful space and there are plenty of resources to use and take away with you when you visit. Worship at Howick church takes place twice a month and the church is used for a variety of celebratory and seasonal services also.

Built in 1746 the church is a Grade 2 listed building and underwent a Romanesque remodelling in 1849, although records of a Norman chancel predate the first recorded parish priest in 1158. Alongside the Hall, Gardens and Arboretum, the church is beautifully maintained and well loved - just look at our visitors book!

Arts and creativity are a prominent feature of our building including regular flower arrangements and displays, as well as the ninety tapestry kneelers depicting the history, flora and fauna of Howick. Made by local artists and stitchers, this wonderful collection of community art is displayed in the church which is open for visitors during opening hours of the Hall and Gardens. You can view them here -

As part of our recent sustainability survey we are working to make the church building more accessible to the public and, with the PCC and charity trustees, developing a communications strategy to welcome both visitors and worshippers. In 2012 a new heating system was installed; continuing this work there is scope to prioritise internal improvements to the church’s fabric, including the organ.
